Background:
These prints are from a guide featuring "the most striking and beautiful of the
Alpine plants". It was published in response to an increased interest in Great
Britain in this species in the late 1800s, due in large part to the plants brought back by
plant hunters.
The accompanying text, authored by David Wooster
(?1824-1888), included a botanical description of each plant, together with details when
it was first discovered or introduced into Great Britain, and instructions on its
cultivation.
The engravings are based on illustrations by the British natural history artist and
engraver Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917). |
