Background:
These hand-colored Rose prints are from the Second Edition of English Botany,
illustrated by James Sowerby. Sowerby was an English naturalist, artist, engraver
and teacher.
The Second Edition was published in the 1830s
and 1840s and used the same illustrations as those that appeared in the First Edition,
though featured a different schema for organizing the botanicals. For that reason,
each print features the plate number from the First Edition, as well as the new plate
number assigned in the Second. The complete series featured over 3000 prints
depicting plants native to the British Isles.
