Background:
These mid-1800s hand-colored prints are from a guide to "exotic plants"
introduced into English greenhouses. As stated in the preface to the guide, the
purpose was to provide a familiar and technical description "to facilitate the study
of the plants, rather than to excite adoration" of them.
