Background:

These prints are taken from a British guide to ferns, both native to the country and those found overseas.  The illustrations are by A. F. Lydon, a well known naturalist illustrator in England (you can find another example of Lydon's work in the Nature section of our site - Fresh Water Fishes).  Each species of fern is faithfully presented in minute detail, and the accompanying text (written by Edward Lowe), while aimed at a popular audience, is scientific in tone.
