Background:
This series of Dog prints was published by Cassell and Company in England in the early
1900s. The prints were part of a series that described the "natural history of
British dogs and their foreign relatives", along with information on breeding, kennel
management and veterinary treatment.
The prints are based on paintings made of the
Dogs, many of them awarded show champion status. The text at the bottom of the print
identifies the breed, name of the dog, owner and information on the ancestry.
Cassell and Company was a leading publisher of
natural history texts in the second half of the 1800s. It was founded by John
Cassell (1817-1865) who was in turn a carpenter, temperance preacher, tea and coffee
merchant and eventually turned to publishing for a livelihood. |
