Background:
These whimsical sporting prints are from a biography of John Mytton, "formerly MP for
Shewsbury, High Sheriff for the counties of Salop & Merioneth, and Major of the North
Shropshire Yeomanry Cavalry." It was authored by his neighbor and friend who
went by the pen name of Nimrod, and recounted his "eccentric and extravagant
exploits" in Hunting, Shooting, Driving and Racing. As Nimrod says in the
Preface, "I shall unload the memory of man I shall never be ashamed to call my
friend". The engravings are based on the illustrations of Henry Alken and
Thomas Rawlins.
