Background:
These Vegetable and Fruit botanical prints are from a guide to the
"formation and management of a kitchen garden and the cultivation of
useful vegetables and fruits".
Not intended for the city dweller where space was at a premium, it was recommended
that the garden should consist of "rectangular, convenient sized plots, slightly
slopping to the south, with good walks of sufficient width between". The goal
of the guide was to "produce abundant supplies of all the kitchen garden
productions ordinarily required in a substantial middle-class household".
