The beautiful Botanical prints shown on this page are from an early 1900s encyclopedia
published in the United States.
Many early encyclopedias contained wonderful
graphics to accompany the reference text. These plates were printed by the New York
firm of Julius Bien and Company, founded by German lithographer Julius Bien who emigrated
to the United States around 1848. It became one of the great lithographic printing
houses in the country through the first part of the 1900s until its decline with the
introduction of new printing technologies such as offset printing..
