Background:
These prints are from William Baxter's British Flowering Plants, published from
1834 to 1843. Baxter, a Scotsman, was appointed curator of the Oxford Botanic Garden
at the age of 25. Most of the botanical illustrations were done by two local artists
- Issac Russell and C. Matthews, and colored by Baxter's daughters and
daughter-in-law. Wilfred Blunt, in The Art of Botanical Illustration, describes the
Baxter botanicals as "attractive, and, in the main, well-illustrated".
