Background:
These prints are from an early American edition of Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter
Rabbit.
First published by Frederick Warne in England in
1902, The Tale of Peter Rabbit is the work that is most synonymous with her.
As would be the case in future stories, some of Potter's pets were used as
"models" for the illustrations.
This version of her work is known in literary
circles as the "pirated" Peter Rabbit. Potter's publisher failed to get a
copyright when it was first published in England, and an American publishing house (Henry
Altemus) picked up on this and republished the work in the States as part of their
"Wee Books" series. You can rest assured that Frederick Warne did not make
this same mistake when publishing her future works! |
