Background:
These beautiful prints of monthly scenes were produced from the original woodblock
engravings by Gustave Baumann (1881-1971), regarded as the American Master of color
woodblocks. Born in Germany, Baumann emigrated to the United States in the early
1900s to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Each engraving is accompanied by a
poem authored by James Whitcomb Riley. Baumann's style reflects the strong influence
of the American Southwest on the emerging Arts and Crafts movement.
