Liturgical Prints from Missale Romanum These liturgical prints are from an edition of the Missale Romanum (or Roman Missal) dating to the 1650s. The Missale Romanum is the liturgical book containing the text used in the celebration of the Mass of the Roman Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. Included was the Sacramentary with the prayers, one or more books of Scriptural readings and the antiphons (responses, usually sung in Gregorian chant) to a psalm or some other part of the religious service. The antiphon woodblocks presented on this page
include a practice known as rubrication where a letter, word or section of the text is
printed in red ink to highlight it. |

New Yorker Magazine Covers - 1947-1948 While The New Yorker magazine is known for the quality of its writing, many people also recognize the distinctive cover style and cartoons featured in the magazine. We are pleased to feature a selection of original cover art from 1947-1948. The covers are noteworthy for the range of their subject matter - sporting activities, taxes, life in cities - both small and large - and politics. Where possible the name of the artist is identified. The selections presented on this page include covers by two of the best known New Yorker artists - Constantin Alajalov and Rea Irvin (who also did the cover for the very first New Yorker featuring the fictional Manhattan dandy Eustace Tilley). The appeal of The New Yorker covers is best summarized by the following description from a book on the history of the magazine: The covers capture "A special moment, fleetingly observed".
