Background:

This delightful series of prints is from In Love's Garden, a compilation of romantic verse by the American poet and artist John Cecil Clay, published in the early 1900s.  Clay also was the artist for each of the drawings on which the prints are based.  The format is reminiscent of Les Fleurs Animees by the French artist Jean Grandville in which he portrayed women in the guise of flowers.
