Background:
This series of prints date from 1822 and was produced from engravings for a folio of
French scenery, encompassing views of both the city and country. The engravings are
based on "drawings made in 1819 by Captain Batty of the Grenadier Guards".
This is fine example of the art of engraving as evidenced by the level of detail
shown in each print.
Each print is provided with the original page of
accompanying text providing interesting detail on the scene show. For example,
following is an extract for the Fountain at Saint Cloud narrative:
"The best time for viewing this fountain is a little
before sunset, when
the glowing rays of the setting sun gleam through the
spray of the
fountain in its fall, and give a sparkling lustre to the
surrounding foliage." |
