Botanical Prints Spotlight

Economic Botany  (1853)

These unique hand-colored prints portray plants with an emphasis on their botanical and commercial characteristics (hence the term "economic botany").

The plants shown on the plates are identified for use in for food, clothing, tanning, dyeing, building, medicine, perfumery among other applications.

As noted in the preface to this series "It will appear strange to many when they hear for the first time that no popular work has yet appeared devoted exclusively to the commercial properties of the vegetable kingdom".
