Background:
These prints of North American flowers are from issues of The Botanical Register
published in the early 1800s. The Register was founded by Sydenham Edwards
in 1815 to promote an understanding of ornamental flowers cultivated in British gardens,
though originally found in overseas countries. Edwards had been one of the original
botanical artists for Curtis's Botanical Magazine. The Register
was published through 1847.
The accompanying text pages identify the
location in the United States where the floral samples were found which were eventually
sent back to England. In some cases reference is made to samples found during the
Lewis and Clark expedition.
